Welcome to the August edition of the Boricua Cigar Club subscription pack.
This month our featured manufacturer is Blackbird Cigar Company with two of their offerings included in this month's pack, the Crow and the Finch. We also have a classic from My Father Cigars, another from Steve Saka, and finally a 70th Anniversary cigar from Manuel Quesada.
Each of our subscribers also received a randomly selected cigar that I collected from my the PCA trade show. Look out for the gold star on the cigar's packaging.
Without further ado, learn more about the cigars included in the August 2023 box. Enjoy! 💨
Blackbird Cigar Crow
Headquartered in Hialeah, Florida, the Blackbird Cigar Company is a boutique cigar brand that is headed by master cigar maker Jonas Santana. The cigars are matched and named to a specific type of bird. Each line in the Blackbird collection is crafted to appeal to a different type of smoker. Blackbird cigars are hand crafted at the Blackbird Dominicana factory in the Dominican Republic.
Created by master blender Jonas Santana, the Blackbird Crow is a medium-strength cigar that is expertly hand rolled in the Dominican Republic. The Crow’s dark, sweet Mexican San Andres maduro wrapper cloaks a Dominican binder, which houses premium Nicaraguan and USA Pennsylvania fillers. The Blackbird’s solid construction creates a smooth draw that allows its complex flavors of spice, chocolate, and tobacco to come through.
Blackbird Cigar Finch
The Blackbird Finch is a mild stick that is handmade in the Dominican Republic. A light brown Sumatra wrapper is perched over the Finch’s Indonesian binder and long-filler tobaccos from the USA in the Dominican Republic. The Blackbird Finch’s white pepper flavor is best paired with a hot cup of coffee.
Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ
Created by Pepin and his son Jaime, this fine handmade employs a wonderful blend of Nicaraguan Corojo and Criollo long-leaf tobaccos inside a flavorful Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper. The result is a full-bodied smoke layered with deep flavors. The aroma is earthy and spicy, complementing the rich, leathery flavors perfectly.
Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ is handmade in Miami, in order to maintain a high level of quality control, making this a rare treat for the senses. Quantity is extremely limited.
Dunbarton & Trust Cigars Umbagog
Umbagog is the name of one of the most pristine wilderness lakes in all of the United States. It is located on the border between Coös County, New Hampshire, and Oxford County, Maine.
“ The 'Oom-BAH-gog' is a perfect cigar for time upon the waters. It is robust and durable, designed to endure the rigors of outside activity with its thick broadleaf capa and easy burning liga. This is a cigar that doesn’t pretend to be special or seek to elicit the “oohs or aahs” of the cigar snobs. It is an honest, hardworking cigar that is meant to be smoked, chewed upon and lit however many times you wish. For me, it is the perfect cigar for mowing the yard, hiking, four wheelin’ and of course, fishing!" - Steve Saka
Manuel Quesada 70th
When a cigar maker has a birthday - especially a big one - they blend a cigar to commemorate the milestone. Case in point, Manuel Quesada turned 70 in 2017. I’d like to thank him for blending an extremely tasty stogie! Trust me when I say, this is a testament to Sr. Quesada’s talents as a blender.
Draped in a Cuban-seed wrapper with a combination of long-fillers from Nicaragua and the Dominican tucked underneath, Manuel Quesada 70th exudes notes of dried fruit, almonds, leather, and a twinge of black pepper. Only 1,000 boxes of each size was made and you now get to enjoy one.
